A Service member stationed outside the U. There are several types of BAH to satisfy various housing situations that occur among military members. In general, the amount of BAH you receive depends on your location, pay grade, and whether you have dependents. Under most circumstances, you receive BAH for the location where you are assigned, not where you live. Additionally, you may be entitled to some BAH amounts if you are residing separately from your dependents.
This occurs in situations involving unaccompanied overseas tours or having a dependent Child that resides with a former Spouse. Specialist Tachina Williams, U.
Specialist Dante Williams, U. There are plenty of housing options on base for families. We got the option of choosing between three different communities. We chose to stay in Liberty Woods here in Fort Stewart. Tachina : We currently live in a four bedroom town home. It has a living room, and a kitchen area and a dining area. Upstairs we have four bedrooms, with our kids' rooms, our master bedroom, the guest bedroom and Dante's man cave. So, we have quite a bit of space so that we can just be comfortable in.
Dante : Living on base is important to me because I can get to work in, like, five minutes. The commissary is right there, so everything that we need is here on base. Tachina : Quite often we have barbecues, or we grill out, and we either do it at the neighbors' house or our house. And they just bring their kids over and their families over and we just, you know, relax and watch the game and eat some barbecue.
Dante : The things that I enjoy for the kids: There's a playground at every spot. We can go to either the one down the street or take them to the one around the corner, and so there's a variety of things that the kids can do. Tachina : My kids are really happy here. They love playing in the backyard, and every time they see somebody out the window, they're like, "Mommy, my friend's playing outside!
Service members who qualify to live off base are given a Basic Allowance for Housing BAH as part of their compensation. Similarly, a service member who is married with children would receive more than a single service member. Ultimately, BAH ensures that everyone gets the allowance they need to cover their living situation.
While active-duty members join the Military on a full-time basis, the National Guard and Reserve are a part-time commitment. Here's what will most likely happen when you report to your first permanent duty station. You'll arrive with your family and stay in temporary family billeting.
This is sort of an on-base "hotel" for incoming and outgoing military members and their families. It's a good idea to call billeting as soon as you know what day you are going to arrive to make reservations.
You'll also be assigned a "sponsor" before your arrival you'll get a letter with the name and phone number of your sponsor. A sponsor is a person in your squadron who is assigned to help make your move easier. You can call your sponsor when you know your arrival date and they can make the billeting reservations for you.
There is a small cost for on-base family billeting. You can stay in on-base family billeting for a maximum of 30 days the base can extend this to 60 days if there is space available.
If you can't get into on-base family billeting, you'll have to rent a motel off-base. Whether or not you stay in on-base family billeting or off-base motel, you will continue to receive your authorized housing allowance and food allowance.
Additionally, for the first ten days following your arrival, you'll receive a special allowance, called TLE Temporary Lodging Expense. After the ten days is up, you'll have to pay for billeting or motel out of your pocket although you'll still be receiving your housing allowance and sustenance allowance. You'll visit the housing office and if you like , put your name on the on-base family housing list.
At this time, they can tell you approximately how long it will take before an on-base house becomes available. If an on-base house is not immediately available or, if you don't want to live on base , you'll visit the off-base housing referral section, which is within the Housing Office.
They can give you a list of local rentals that have decided to list themselves with the base. You are not obligated to use this list. After you find a place that you want to live, you take a copy of the lease before you sign it to the housing referral office.
They check the lease to make sure it contains a military clause that allows you to break the lease in case you have to move due to military orders. Make sure that the military hasn't put the location on the off-limits list, which is for places that have proven racial discrimination, known drug use.
If you are living off-base, and your on-base family housing becomes available, the military will hire a moving company to move your property from your off-base rental to your on-base family housing unit.

A guide for Service families about applying for, maintaining, moving in and out of Service Family Accommodation SFA is available at www. Most people want to make the best of their home but when living in SFA you must seek permission in advance if you want to make any material change to your SFA. As long as permission is sought first, through your allocation officer, you are generally permitted to carry out minor encroachments either on the inside or to the outside of your home.
This includes erecting a greenhouse, garden shed, TV aerial, satellite dish, house alarm and security lights. At the pre-move-out appointment these changes will be inspected — where it is considered that the encroachment does not provide added value to the property, you will be required to remove and make good. All costs incurred in the removal will be your responsibility — this also applies if you redecorate your property.
Major changes will not usually be permitted, such as replacing a kitchen. Even if you know you will be based in a property for some time, these changes would introduce non-standard fixtures and fittings that will not be covered by the maintenance contract.
In addition, families should not interfere with fittings, such as gas ovens or gas fires, as this is potentially dangerous and illegal if you are not qualified. We are here to help! Overview Service Family Accommodation SFA is provided by the MOD so that your serving partner can live as close to their duty station as possible and live married accompanied.
Please check our COVID section for up-to-date information, as the coronavirus outbreak may affect the advice given on this page. Back to top 04 The welcome return of surplus SFA Surplus SFA used to be an endangered beast in military housing; however, as a result of rebasing and ongoing changes to the Defence Estate, there is currently a surplus of SFA in certain areas although the type and size of SFA included may be restricted.
Eligibility Currently, in order to be entitled to SFA you need to be married or have sole custody of any children. Find out more To apply for a surplus SFA, please contact Amey on option 3 to check if surplus is available in the required area, and then apply via the e on DII. What do you need to do? If you have an application for surplus SFA in the system and you no longer need it, please go back in to the e and cancel it. If you have an outstanding application for surplus in the system you should have heard recently from Amey Occupancy Services about an allocation — the intention is to convert all surplus applications into allocations where possible by the end of the year.
If you are still keen to take up the option of surplus, but have previously been refused, make a new application — all new applications should now be responded to within 15 working days. Allocations for LTR E surplus can be made within a mile radius, so if nothing is available at your duty station you may need to compromise on distance in order to get an SFA.
