It can be assumed that he was used to the odd things that happened whenever his cousin was around. By the summer of , Dudley had grown so large that the school outfitters at Smeltings Academy did not stock knickerbockers big enough for him anymore; he had reached roughly the size and weight of a baby killer whale.
To rectify the situation, the school nurse forced a diet regime upon Dudley, which emptied his eating habits of all the things he enjoyed: fizzy drinks, cakes, chocolate bars, burgers, doughnuts, chips, etc. To make Dudley feel better, Petunia insisted that the whole family follow the diet, as well: to raise Dudley's morale, she also tended to give him more to eat than Harry who, unbeknownst to Dudley, kept a secret stash of food in his bedroom.
When Vernon left the kitchen to collect the post, Dudley stole his grapefruit quarter. The next day when the Weasleys arrived to take Harry to the Quidditch World Cup , Dudley nervously ran his hands over his backside: remembering the incident with Hagrid in , he was unwilling to present the same target to wizards again.
As the Weasleys returned to the Burrow through the Floo Network , Fred "accidentally" dropped numerous sweets in brightly coloured wrappers on the floor, knowing Dudley would eat one of them.
The sweet revealed to be a Ton-Tongue Toffee , caused Dudley's tongue to expand greatly and cause him pain. Before allowing Mr Weasley to fix it, Petunia tried to rip the tongue out of Dudley's mouth, which nearly suffocated him. His tongue was more than four feet long before the Dursleys allowed Mr Weasley to shrink it.
In , Dudley took up boxing, which gave him even more prominence over other children. As a result, he lost weight and became less spoiled. However, he was still described as "vast as ever," but it was implied that his bulk was more muscle than fat because of the boxing. He would roam the streets with his gang, vandalising public property, taking up smoking and terrorising younger children.
After taking up his workout regime, Dudley became boxing champion at his school. At one point they beat up a boy for "cheeking him". A dementor attempts to kiss Dudley. Along with his parents, Dudley learned that Lord Voldemort had returned to a physical body, with the intent of subjugating both the wizarding and Muggle communities once again. On his way home one night with his gang , Dudley ran into Harry.
He and Harry were attacked in the street by two dementors , sent by Dolores Umbridge to harm Harry unknown to Harry. Harry's stag Patronus saved them from being kissed , [14] but Dudley, confused by what had happened, pinned the blame for the attack on his cousin, as he could not see the Dementors.
It was a terribly painful moment for him, and led to him changing his ways. When Albus Dumbledore paid a personal visit to the Dursleys in , he showed pity for Dudley, blaming the Dursleys for the "appalling damage" their parenting inflicted on their son. Dudley was very confused by this statement, and did not show any signs of planning to rectify his parents' "mistakes.
After Harry arrived at Number Four, in , Dudley made at least one known attempt to reconcile with Harry. Dudley placed a cup of tea outside Harry's room. However, Harry initially misinterpreted the gesture as another prank, as Dudley had placed the cup on the floor and Harry stepped on it by accident.
When Harry parted ways with the Dursleys, Dudley was the only member to bid Harry farewell. Dudley shaking Harry's hand as they part ways at Number 4 Privet Drive. When Dudley was attacked by the Dementors he saw himself, for the first time, as he really was. This was an extremely painful but ultimately salutary lesson and began the transformation in him. He shook Harry's hand and thanked him for saving his life. The members of the Order of the Phoenix escorting the Dursleys into hiding were not satisfied by this and thought a more adequate apology was in order, but the Dursleys left with nothing more to say, Harry himself noting that Dudley's awkward thanks was the Dursley equivalent of a heartfelt expression of gratitude.
In Dudley's adult life, he got married and became a father of two. He and Harry remained on "Christmas card terms," and Harry sometimes took his children to Dudley's when they were in the neighbourhood, occasions dreaded by James , Albus , and Lily. It is unknown if Dudley ever returned to Little Whinging or if their family had stayed in the place they were relocated to, [20] or if they had moved elsewhere. By , Dudley's mother had passed away. Dudley had watery blue eyes and thick blond hair.
Growing up, Dudley was extremely fat, at least four times Harry's size. In , he had " reached the size and weight of a young killer whale " [13] — somewhere between and pounds [2]. Dudley was too large to fit in a school uniform, so was forced to go on a diet by his school, which was largely comprised of food which Vernon called "rabbit food" fruits and vegetables which Dudley rarely ate otherwise.
Vernon and Petunia usually made excuses on why he was large, such as that his poundage was really "puppy fat" or that he was a "growing boy. When Harry and the Dursleys ate breakfast Dudley's flab would often hang off the chair because he was too big and eventually a TV was bought for the kitchen after Dudley had complained about the distance from the living room to the fridge, which was an example of his great laziness.
This may have had something to do with his weight problem. However, by after he was attacked by Umbridge 's dementors, Dudley had taken up boxing and weight lifting, and lost a great deal of weight. Dudley was an unpleasant and spoiled child. His parents spoiled him to the point of becoming grossly obese, demanding, selfish, and manipulative, but most of all, extremely ungrateful.
During his eleventh birthday, he screamed when he received one gift fewer than the previous year, making his parents promise to buy him two more, and pretended to cry when he realised Harry would have to come with him for his birthday trip to the zoo. Dudley had an awful habit of bullying children who were weaker and as much as five years younger than he was, and when he forgot his fear of Harry's powers , callously insulted him in any way possible, even jeering at Harry about his obviously disturbing nightmares.
Despite being fairly manipulative, Dudley appeared to have a low level of intelligence. In , whilst Rubeus Hagrid was attempting to enter the Hut-on-the-Rock , he foolishly quoted "Where's the cannon?
However, in , Dudley faced dementors for the first time. Though a Dementor attack typically forced a person to re-live the worst moments of their life, Dudley's life-so-far of luxury and greed contained no "worst moments," and therefore, during the attack, Dudley saw himself as the spoiled, rotten and cruel bully he truly was. He was thus forced, rather harshly, to realise he needed to change his ways.
This led to him regretting his treatment of Harry and his later attempts at reconciliation. Dudley with his parents, Vernon and Petunia Dursley. Vernon and Petunia Dursley spoiled and coddled their son as much as they neglected and abused their nephew Harry. They appeared to buy Dudley anything he wanted, often apparently to waylay a tantrum Vernon going so far as bribing him to accept a kiss from Aunt Marge.
They indulged their son with treats and activities both out of blind adoration for the boy and as a means of emphasising to Harry what he was missing. They were generally in denial of the obesity brought on by Dudley's gluttony, which they wrote off as being either the healthy appetite of a growing boy or that his poundage was really "puppy fat" and were completely oblivious to the fact that Dudley did not have friends, so much as a schoolyard gang and victims.
Their relationship was awkward, but it was a major change from when they grew up. It was revealed that Petunia passed away sometime before , but the reason for her death was never shared.
Harry Potter fans were always hopeful that Petunia would embrace her connection to the wizarding world. However, those dreams have been dashed. At least Dudley eventually found the courage to change his behavior towards Harry. Kara Hedash is a features editor and writer for Screen Rant. At least one web site puts it on 23 June. We hear that Dudley is the only child of Vernon Dursley and Petunia Dursley , and that in their opinion, there is no finer child anywhere. Offset against this, we have the observation of Minerva McGonagall , who protests Albus Dumbledore 's decision to leave Harry with these, "the very worst sort of Muggles.
Ten years later, we see the Dursley house again. We are told that there are lots of pictures of Dudley, a monumentally fat child, where previously there had been lots of pictures of a monumentally fat toddler. It is Dudley's birthday, and Petunia tells Harry to be extra careful cooking breakfast, she doesn't want anything to spoil her Dudley's special day.
When Dudley comes down to breakfast, he is outraged that there are only 37 gifts for him; last year he had gotten To defuse the explosion, Petunia promises that they will buy him two more gifts. Dudley eventually works out that this is 39, and this satisfies him. Shortly, though, Mrs. Figg phones to say that she can't take Harry for the day, as she has broken her leg.
Vernon and Petunia decide that they have to take Harry with them on Dudley's outing to the zoo, as they can't trust him alone in the house, and Dudley starts to throw a tantrum at this. He is interrupted, though, by the arrival of Piers, his friend, who is also going to the zoo. Dudley doesn't want Piers to see him crying, so that effectively is an end to his resistance.
At the zoo, Harry manages to get a lemon ice when the vendor assumes that all three of the children will have something, and Vernon, to keep up appearances, must buy Harry something as well; and later, Harry gets nearly all of Dudley's dessert a "Knickerbocker Glory" when Dudley complains that it is too small and Vernon gets him a second one.
In the reptile house, Dudley quickly goes to find the biggest snake in the place, and bangs on the glass to try and make it move. When it doesn't, he goes away disappointed. Harry finds that the snake understands him, and while he is talking with it, Piers calls Dudley and Vernon to come and look at it. Dudley, waddling up at speed, hits Harry in the ribs, and Harry falls on the floor. Much to everyone's amazement, the glass in front of the snake vanishes, and the snake escapes, telling Harry it's off to Brazil.
Dudley claims that the snake almost bit his leg off, and Piers says he was almost squeezed to death, but the worst is that Piers, calming down a bit, says Harry was talking to it. This results in Vernon locking Harry in his cupboard under the stairs for a week.
When we next see Dudley, school vacations have started. Dudley and his gang often come over to visit, and Harry does his best to stay hidden during these episodes, as Dudley, with Piers, Dennis, Malcolm, and Gordon, have settled on hitting Harry as their favorite pastime.
Harry looks forward to the end of summer vacation, as Dudley is going to Vernon's old school, Smeltings, while Harry is going to be going to Stonewall Comprehensive. Note to US readers: Smeltings, presumably a "public" school, is what is called a private school in the US, while Stonewall, a comprehensive school, is what would be called public in the US. While Vernon and Petunia get all teary-eyed over the sight of Dudley in his Smeltings uniform, Harry is hard-put to restrain his laughter.
Dudley is in his school uniform the next morning at breakfast. When Vernon tells him to fetch the mail, Dudley tells him to have Harry do it; when Harry demurs, Vernon tells Dudley to poke Harry with his stick. Harry, seeing that Dudley is all too ready to do so, fetches the mail and finds the first of what will be a large number of letters for himself.
Before he gets to open this one, though, Dudley calls out that he has received a letter, and Vernon pulls it away from him. Reading it is evidently a serious shock for both Vernon and Petunia, but they refuse to let either Harry or Dudley read it, despite their demands. On returning home from work that day, Vernon tells Harry that they are moving him from his cupboard to the smallest bedroom at the house, the one that has been to date used to store all of Dudley's broken and disused gifts.
Dudley is angered by this encroachment on his domain, and Harry can hear him bawling even with his new door closed. The following morning, another letter arrives for Harry; Dudley, sent to get the mail, retrieves it, but is not allowed to read it.
The following morning, Vernon sleeps across the front door as the mailman arrives, delivering several more letters for Harry. Vernon then stays home, and nails up the letterbox.
Dudley can only watch in horror as Vernon's antics to prevent the delivery of these letters grows ever more irrational. He clearly fears that his father has gone insane, and Petunia, who alone understands the reason for his actions, cannot explain.
Vernon's irrationality comes to a head on Sunday, and results in them driving off into the wilds of England. They end up in a ramshackle house, built on a rock out at sea, after Dudley has complained about missing one of his favorite television shows. Here, after a wholly unsatisfactory dinner, Vernon and Petunia take the one bed, and Dudley sleeps on the couch, leaving Harry with one threadbare blanket on the floor.
Harry, looking at the watch on Dudley's pudgy wrist, recognizes the arrival of his eleventh birthday. This is how they are found by Rubeus Hagrid , "keeper of the keys and grounds at Hogwarts ", when he bursts in at midnight.
Dudley, apart from being petrified at this huge and woolly man breaking into their house, and trying to hide behind his parents, plays little part in this scene; he does twitch a little when Hagrid dumps a half-dozen sausages onto a plate and hands them to Harry, but Vernon forbids his taking anything from Hagrid, and Hagrid says that Dudley doesn't need any more feeding up.
When Vernon, resisting Harry's going off to Hogwarts, calls Albus Dumbledore a "crackpot old fool," Hagrid loses his temper, and pointing his umbrella at Dudley, charms a pig's tail onto him. Panicked, Dudley, Vernon, and Petunia retreat into the bedroom.
Hagrid says that he had meant to turn Dudley into a pig, but he was already so much like one that there wasn't much left to do. The next we see Dudley, it is the day that Harry is to take the Hogwarts Express. Vernon agrees to take Harry to London to catch the train, saying they had to go to town anyway to get Dudley's tail surgically removed. Harry shows his ticket to Vernon, who knows that there is no platform nine and three quarters.
Vernon takes him to King's Cross Station, gets all his goods onto a luggage cart, and points at platforms nine and ten, showing him that there is no platform nine and three quarters, then gets back into the car and drives off.
Harry sees that all three of the Dursleys are laughing. On Harry's return from Hogwarts, we see Dudley and Aunt Petunia in the background, looking terrified. Harry comments to Ron that he's going to have fun with Dudley this summer, because the Dursleys don't know that he's not allowed to do magic.
On Harry's birthday, Vernon is preparing for what he expects to be a major sale, entertaining a very important client in his home.
