I have decided i am going to go the sr20det conversion as i have already seen pictures of it done before and I can complete it with alot less money. Could someone please help and tell me which sr20det is better and why. Also if they all have the same sump positions. Cheers Pete. Tags: None. The Pupat. Best motor is the GTi-R. Most useable in a Rear drive configuration for most is the late model S14 black top? S14 onwards is a bit more refined than the earlier S13 versions. They come with variable inlet cam timing which aids drivability. Plus, if you are buying an imported engine and not planning on a rebuild, they're newer and less likely to be clagged although still extremely possible as with any jap import performance engine regardless of it's age!
RWD motor wise the S13 motor redtop as some call them lacks VVT on the inlet and has a low mounted plenum but the head flows better in stock form, just looking at the inlet side of the head and there is almost a straight air path into the cylinders. It can have a red or black post rocker cover meaning that the term redtop and blacktop is confusing.
The S14 and S15 motors have VVT dunno if this really helps them much but i have heard that it's often disabled when cams are upgraded and make more power than the S13 motor but it's mostly due to the turbos i believe. They all have blacktops. S15s have bigger injectors to. Apart from that they are near identical.
I'd say that the S13 motor is probably capable of flowing more air through it's head but in reality prolly makes little difference and you can probably be happy with any of the three. GTiR i don't know much about but it's a whole different block, head etc, prolly not easy to fit in a NS setup.
Oh yeah as far as looking at motors go the sump pans can get dented and starve the motor of oil very easily, apparently this manifests itself in the top end very quickly due to lack of oil pressure so thats easy enough to check, along with all the other general motor checky things you can do ie leakdown etc.
If looks could kill you'd have eyes like cyanide You can use this feature to rate this page. Filed under Engine Guides. When was it built? What is the displacement? What is the engine configuration? Who built it? Is it turbo-charged?
What is the stock boost pressure? What are the cylinder head features? What is the stock power output? What is the stock torque output? What cars housed this engine? How tuneable is the stock engine? With more serious upgrades PS is available. Over PS is generally considered to require internal engine reinforcement.
